Nigel Coates

Born in 1949, is an architect, designer and author. His book Guide to Ecstacity (Laurence King, 2003) unfolds his belief in the imagination as a design tool for considering every aspect of living in cities. His buildings include The Wall, Tokyo (1990), the National Centre for Popular Music, Sheffield, UK (1999) and the Body Zone in the Millennium Dome, London (2000). His furniture and lighting is produced by important Italian companies including Slamp, Fratelli Boffi and Edizioni Poltronova. In collectable design Coates is known for his sensual and provocative form-making. His limited editions extend to the four pieces that make up Hypnerotosphere (2008), the Baroccabilly collection (2010) and the Casa Reale collection that was launched at the Salone del Mobile in Milan in 2012. Many of these are in important private collections around the world and in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
